Dear Parents and Carers

We hope your children have settled easily into their new Year 4 classes. Please find below details of various aspects of the learning and organisation of
Year 4.

Spelling: This will be set every Monday, to be returned on the following Monday. Your child will have a task to complete on these spellings which should be recorded in their homework books. There will be a spelling assessment every Friday when your child will be tested on that week’s words. We would encourage you to practise these words with your child on a daily basis, if possible.

Maths: This will be set every Monday, to be returned the following Monday. Your child will bring home their maths homework in a book which should be returned each week.

Topic: At the beginning of each term your child will receive a spider diagram of additional optional homework tasks. Guidance can be found in your child’s homework book.

Home Reading
All children should select two library books from the school library. One will stay at school and the other should be taken home. We would encourage you to listen to your child read on a regular basis. The library books should be returned when completed or when requested.

In addition, children will be issued with a home contact book which includes a reading record to take home. Home contact books will be checked once a week. Please ensure your child has their home contact book in school every day.

P.E. and Games
Children should have their PE kit in school at all times. PE kits can be taken home to be washed at the end of each half term. Each class will also have swimming sessions at some point during the year. Dates will be advised beforehand.

Children must have shorts, t-shirt, plimsolls or trainers for P.E. lessons. If the weather is cold, they will be allowed to wear tracksuit bottoms and sweatshirts for outside games. Wearing jewellery during PE is dangerous and not allowed and stud earrings must be removed. Children with newly pierced ears must bring in tape to cover their earrings. Please note that teachers and other members of staff are not permitted to remove a child’s earrings, therefore children must be able to remove and replace them on their own or bring a suitable microporous tape to cover them.

May we take this opportunity to thank all of you who have named your child’s clothing and belongings. “I can’t find my jumper / T-shirt / shorts,” is a common complaint at times and reuniting clothing with owners is made so much easier when names are inside. If you could name all items of clothing and lunch boxes, it would be much appreciated.

Trips & Activities
In Year 4 there are a range of trips and activities for which we need financial support. Please be aware that prices are approximate. However, at the request of parents, we have tried to detail these in advance for the year as follows:

 Design Technology activities for year - £3.00

 Beaulieu Out of Town Centre - 5 day optional residential visit – November - £190.00

 Manor Farm (for those not going to Beaulieu) – November - £7.50

 Council Chamber – Spring Term - Free

 Portals to the Past Roman Workshop – Summer Term - £4.00

 Professional Musicians – there may be additional requests for payments should performances to the school be arranged during the year
(If possible we will organise an event related to the Ancient Greeks topic. We will advise the details of this as soon as we have them. We will try to keep the cost under £10.)

Curriculum Map
A curriculum map, which is a general overview of the work your child will be doing during the year, will be available on our website. If you require a hard copy please contact the office.

Healthy Snacks
Children are welcome to bring in fruit, cereal bars or any healthy snack. Please note that crisps, chocolate bars and sweets are not acceptable healthy snacks. Children will be issued with a water bottle in school so will have access to drinking water during the day.

If you are able to spare some time to support the children, a meeting will be arranged in the autumn term for those parents wishing to help. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Finally, if at any time you have any queries or concerns, please let us know.

Yours sincerely,

The Year 4 team

Miss Olive - 4O
